About

Cyrillic is the alphabet of Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Mongolian, and many other languages—over 250 million people use Cyrillic worldwide. Russian uses 33 letters; other languages add or remove letters as needed. If you recognize Latin letters in Cyrillic, prepare for surprises: С looks like C but sounds like S, В looks like B but sounds like V, Р looks like P but sounds like R, and Н looks like N but sounds like H.

Many Cyrillic letters are obvious once you know the pattern. Е is almost like 'ye', Ю is 'yu', and Я is 'ya'. The tricky ones (Ё, Ъ, Ь, Ы, Щ, Ф, Ь) require learning. Once you know Russian Cyrillic, you can sound out 95% of Bulgarian and Serbian text with little extra study.

History

Cyrillic was created in the 9th century by Greek missionaries in Bulgaria, based on Greek uncial script but adapted for Slavic sounds. Legend credits Saints Cyril and Methodius's disciples, who needed an alphabet to translate Greek religious texts into Old Church Slavonic—we honor their work with letter names like 'az' and 'buki'.

Unlike Latin, which adapted to many languages but kept one basic set, Cyrillic evolved differently per language. Russian added Ё, Ъ, Ь, and Ы. Ukrainian kept some old letters and added apostrophes. Each national variant shows centuries of linguistic evolution in its alphabet shapes.

Things You Might Not Know

  • Cyrillic looks similar to Latin because both ultimately trace Greek origins
  • Russian В sounds like English V, not B—same letter, different sound
  • The words 'Cyrillic' and 'alphabet' both come from the brothers who created the first Slavic script
  • Russian has no capital Q or W, but adds unique letters like Ё, Ъ, and Ы

Frequently Asked Questions

How many letters are in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet?
Standard Russian uses 33 letters: Аа, Бб, Вв, Гг, Дд, Ее, Ёё, Жж, Зз, Ии, Йй, Кк, Лл, Мм, Нн, Оо, Pp, Сс, Тт, Уу, Фф, Хх, Цц, Чч, Шш, Щщ, Ъъ, Ыы, Ьь, Ээ, Юю, Яя. Note: Ё is often written without the dots as Е.
Is Cyrillic hard to learn?
About half of Cyrillic letters look just like their Latin counterparts or have obvious shapes. The core Russian letters take 1-2 hours of practice. The tricky ones (Ъ, Ь, Ы, Щ) with no obvious Latin match take extra study, but daily practice makes them familiar quickly.
Can I read Russian with just Latin letters?
No—Russian has unique sounds and letters not in Latin. But you can start reading with a phonetic chart, sounding out words letter-by-letter without understanding meaning—similar to how English speakers sound out unfamiliar words.
What's the difference between Russian and other Cyrillic alphabets?
Russian has 33 letters. Ukrainian adds І, Ї, and Є with 30 letters. Bulgarian remains closest to original Church Slavonic with 30 letters. Serbian uses both Cyrillic and Latin officially. Each language has its own letter modifications.
